Fancy Footwork: Glossary
As with any sports garment, there are particular terms and definitions that need to be detailed. You wouldn’t think there would be much to a down bootie, but you will be surprised. Here are a few definitions to consider.
DWR: Durable Water Repellent – this is a treatment that is applied to a fabric to keep moisture out
EVA: Ethylene-vinyl acetate used in making foam such as insoles for shoes and, wait for it – booties!
Instep: the top of your foot toward the ankle.
Types of down: 100% down is softer, longer lasting, has no quills to poke through and is expensive; down feathers, do not last as long, have quills that poke, flatten easier, but are less expensive; down and feather combinations have down to give it more loft, but still don’t last as long and still have quills that poke, and are somewhat less expensive than 100% down.
Down is harvested from ducks and geese. Please make sure that the company you buy any down products from harvests it humanely. Specifically, it is harvested during the natural molting season of the birds so they are not harmed in any way. The down falls out naturally and is collected and cleaned before use in any products.
Down Fill Power: The higher the number the better quality. 800 fill power is the best, most consistent and most expensive. The 800-fill down has the largest pieces of down, it retains its loft better and traps air easier, which gives it better insulating value.
