A hiking guide and map are fundamental requirements for navigation.  Always carry an emergency kit and a first aid kit, adjusted to local criteria, for handling unforeseen circumstance.

Be able to layer up or down for common temperature differentials which are common in the mountains.  Be prepared for changing and potentially dynamic weather change.
