Laughing Falls and Duchesnay Lake – Yoho National Park – Hiking British Columbia

Part 3 of 4   Hike to Twin Falls in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada

The ascent on rocky and heavily rooted trail from Point Lace Falls to Laughing Falls is initially steep but soon levels out to hug the west bank of the Yoho River as the hike continues north.

The power of the glacial, silt-laden river fed by the Yoho Glacier, which is fed by the Wapta Icefield, is formidable.  Careful footsteps are required to photograph the surging water and tumbling rapids.

Along the trail there is an option to take a 0.4 KM (¼ mile) diversion west to visit Duchesnay Lake.

Duchesnay Lake is a small, sub-alpine lake where images are captured facing south under heavily overcast and moody skies, then facing north where standing in a muddy bog becomes a photographic prerequisite requirement.

On the other side of the main trail there is another short side route to the east which provides an excellent natural viewpoint of the frantic Yoho River.  The Yoho River eventually joins the Kicking Horse River.

A little further along sound becomes overwhelming from the enormous rapids and surging water negotiating narrow, rock-bound channels.  The path of the Yoho River is a powerful visual and audible extravaganza.

A wooden plank footbridge across the Little Yoho River delivers me to the east side of the Laughing Falls Campground in a rocky, wilderness setting at the confluence of the Little Yoho River with the Yoho River.

The quick sweep around the corner brings Laughing Falls into view.  Laughing Falls is a strikingly beautiful waterfall set into a forest-bound, secluded rock cove which amplifies the sound of the falling water.

Time is taken to sit and enjoy this idyllic natural beauty prior to beginning the aggressive ascent on more primitive trail to the Twin Falls Campground and a subsequent ascent to Twin Falls at the base of the Yoho Glacier.

Fifteen years have passed since the previous visit to Yoho National Park and this will be the first opportunity taken for the hike to Twin Falls.  So much to do and so little time.  The hike to Twin Falls will be an amazing experience and the prize of the day.
