The surface of Swiftcurrent Lake is like glass and the day is warming up rapidly.
The day begins with the all-you-can-eat, must-be-done-at-least-once-in-a-lifetime, outstanding buffet breakfast in the posh and historic dining room of the Many Glacier Hotel nestled along the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake.
This sunny, warm day will feature relocation from Swiftcurrent Motor Inn in Many Glacier to Rising Sun along Going-To-The-Sun Road in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA. New accommodation at Rising Sun will be a tiny but comfortable. semi-detached cabin with the advantage of excellent dining at Two Dog Flats.
The short drive from Many Glacier into the park on Going-To-The-Sun Road will place accommodation south of Swiftcurrent Inn with the advantage of easier and more rapid access to a plethora of hiking trails from one side of Glacier National Park to the other along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
In early morning sun, a solo hike/bushwhack/scramble to Josephine Mine on the lower slope of Grinnell Peak is attempted. The off-trail venture begins with a scenic hike along the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake, and subsequently Lake Josephine to the pronounced trail-side pond prior to proceeding straight up the mountain on initially grassy terrain through dense brush and scree.
The sharp right turn off the trail proceeds up the moderately steep, grassy slope towards the cliff face. The slope is laced with a confusing matrix of people and game trails so it is relatively easy to locate an incorrect route and end up too high on the wall too soon. Three attempts to scramble to the top of the plateau, and the remains of the old Josephine Mine, are unsuccessful.
In hindsight, a relaxing and scenic kayak cruise over the mirror surface of Swiftcurrent Lake would have been a viable and more satisfying alternative.
Following relaxation at Many Glacier Hotel, the brief drive from Many Glacier proceeds to new accommodation at Rising Sun along Going-to-the-Sun Road near 9.9 mile (16 KM) long St. Mary Lake for check-in prior to an excellent dinner at Rising Sun's restaurant and grill called Two Dog Flats. Our attractive hostess is Marie-Line from Versailles, France.
Tomorrow's planned adventure is the day hike from Rising Sun to the strikingly beautiful Otokomi Lake.
